Young Guns (at heart) still giving it stick in Cape Town

What a night of wine theatre!
The relatively grey Young Guns (at heart) clearly still have what it takes to draw a crowd - as hundreds of keen winos filled Hall D at the Century City Conference Centre on Friday 22 June 2018.
Fresh from their debut in Joburg the night before - they entertained us with their irreverent and delightful stories as each presented 2 of their wines.
From Chilean Sauvignon Blanc to Neurotransmitters to Love Boats in Sweden to Songs of Pinotage, and Koos Kombuis, to Skyping in from Italy, to Winemakers held ransom - we were regaled by colourful characters.
The Young Guns at Heart were David Nieuwoudt, who crazily makes wines in Chile, Elim and at altitude in the Cederberg; Adi Badenhorst  - a Swartland maverick; Niels Verburg from Luddite wines in Botriver; Beyers Truter, the poet and King of Pinotage; Pieter Walser, the geni from BlankBottle; and Duncan Savage, who took Cape Point Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc to heights of note, and joined us live on Skype from Italy, where he and his wife are celebrating their 40th birthdays!

Roland Peens, who, in his natty yellow jacket, was a dead ringer for David Tennant from Dr Who, arranges this annual event as one of his WineCellar activities - and what a blast it was.

The evening's focus was definitely not on the ph or technical analysis, as Adi's response to Master of Wine Cathy van Zyl's question about how he gets the wine so fresh - and how he manages acidity: 'We don't manage acidity ;  grapes + granite = freshness!'
