The Pebbles Project have launched yet another great business to support the children in the winelands. Their new state-of-the-art industrial kitchen was launched on Saturday 9th March. The building was literally an old pig-shed, and with a bit of imaginative thinking, the project manager Dominic Johnson-Allen managed to get all the right people together to build, kit out and staff the facility with experienced Darren Bunker and 3 kitchen staff. One of the kitchen staff, Jasmin de Koker is a Pebbles graduate. The aim is to make the facility available also to students to job shadow and get work experience. The spotless kitchen is geared to producing 5000 meals daily, and currently already doing 1300 meals daily which are frozen and then distributed to the various wine farms to ensure that the children on the farms have a nutritious meal daily. We had a taste of their various meals (they have 10 at present) and the menu ranges from chicken curry to pasta and tomato and beef sauce. They were all very tasty and the feedback anecdotally is that the children are already showing signs of improved concentration from the good nutrition. The Pebbles Project takes care of over 1500 children across the winelands and in their endeavours to uplift and educate children better, they found that children really struggle with having sufficient nutrition. And as we all know, one cannot concentrate on an empty stomach! In came the Clouds Foundation, established by Paul Burema and Jolanda van Haperen, who see the bigger picture and their foundation, the Stichting Clouds Foundation, alongside Goede Mensen and Add Hope (a KFC initiative), helped to fund the build and will continue to fund the operation for another 5 years. Our thanks to Ruud from Goede Mensen and to Paul and Jolanda for the immense generosity to contribute to the well-being and education of our children on the farms in the winelands.
