There are very few family-owned wineries in South African who can say they have been wine-farming for 100 years! Meerlust, Overgaauw, Weltevrede and now Middelvlei too. Let us know who we have missed!The Momberg family purchased the farm Middelvlei in 1919, and the wine they made originally was sold in bulk to Distillers (predecessor to Distell).Cousins Stiljan (father of current caretakers Ben & Tinnie the winemaker) and his cousin Jan Bek (just love these nicknames!) inherited the farm from their fathers and Jan Bek who was also an active politician of the time, joined the ANC and was an active member from 1992 until he died. Jan Bek in fact sold his shares in Middelvlei to Stiljan and bought Neethlingshof, which he subsequently also sold.Middelvlei really is a little oasis of quiet farm life not quite outside Stellenbosch, just near the Oude Libertas Centre. The Momberg family offer a unique offering unparalleled in the winelands - the good old South African Braai - on a daily basis! And their Braai Master is in fact a Braai Mistress - Pinkie Tukwayo - who has been there for 7 years turning chops and making the most delicious braai-broodjies (toasties) Women are particularly well represented on the farm with Jeanneret (Ben's wife) in charge of marketing, and Althea Williams has been running the tasting room for as long as I can remember.At the celebratory centenary lunch, we were treated to a beautiful rendition of the Happy Birthday song by Thandiswa Mrali and served with a smile by Didi Isaacs, for whom nothing was too much trouble! This was of course accompanied by a tasting through the ages at Middelvlei - and I was super impressed by the older Pinotages and Cabernets.Do take your family along to visit Middelvlei - a true farm with chickens and cows and a large great dane aptly named Merlot who loves to lounge about and look really cute. Games on the lawn and excellent wines (I love their reds particularly)
