Winetech Workshop for Senior Cellar Assistants in Vredendal

Cellar assistants of Namaqua Wines, Lutzville Vineyards, Klawer Cellar and Stellar Winery recently attended the Winetech senior workshop in Vredendal. Similar workshops were presented during June and July in Wellington and the Breedekloof. The participants learned more about the aim and use of cooling and heating during the different winemaking processes.

Mauritius Naude, winemaker of Stellar Winery, facilitated the workshop and shared his knowledge and experience with the participants. The workshop was interactive, with contributions from the cellar assistants.

During the tasting Sauvignon Blanc wines from the Olifants River region were compared with wines from the Coastal region. Mauritius gave information regarding the production of Sauvignon Blanc in South Africa and other wine producing countries known for their Sauvignon Blanc wines. He also explained the aroma profiles of this cultivar. Examples of older wines were compared with younger wines and wines from cooler districts with green characteristics, were compared with wines with a tropical fruit character.

Cellar assistants confirmed afterwards that they found the tasting valuable as they seldom get the opportunity to taste wines from other cellars or to compare wines from their region with wines from other regions. The workshop confirmed once again that a serious need exists for the transfer of knowledge at an advance level to senior cellar assistants in the industry.
