Swartland Producers know how to throw a good party!

There is a tangible unpretentiousness in the Swartland area. I attended the Swartland Producers Street Party a few weeks back on one of the most memorable days in South Africa's recent history as the Springboks played England in the Rugby World Cup in Japan and won! The boys played like demons.  Of course the entire community and all the party-goers were glued to the respective television sets in the old brewery and the primary school, where the ''gees'' was at an all-time high!

What a wonderful day for South Africa. The Bokke won the Rugby World Cup for the 3rd time, making them the only country to win on 3 different continents. They won the extraordinary 1995 final in South Africa just after our recent democracy, and who can forget our very special Nelson Mandela lifting the cup with Francois Pienaar in their No 6 jerseys.  The Boks won again in 2007 in France and we are so proud of Siya Kolisi (The Bok Captain) whose gentle but firm hand took the Boks to victory over England with a mammoth score of 32 to 12, this time in Japan.  The Boks scored 2 tries, also beating a record of never scoring a try in a World Cup Final. Jubilation and "Shosholoza'' was the order of the day.

This meant that perhaps the wines of the winemakers in the Swartland would be overshadowed, but not so.

What a wonderful display of individuality, terroir, talent, interesting labels and wines.

From Aspoestertjie to Schenkfontein to FRAM to Sadie Family Wines to Hofstraat and of course the wonderful crazy and delightful AA Badenhorst - made by Adi himself. To name but a few. Generous tastings were available all day in a very convivial and festive space.

I was fortunate enough to have a media pass, but would happily pay the R450 for the day - which included non-stop tasting of wines you just NEVER see anywhere else, as well as massive tasty samoosas nonstop, and tickets for various delicious foods.  We had their Southern Smoke which was delicious and filling. There was also a ticket in our bookie for Gin & Caperitif from AA Badenhorst at the Royal Hotel, as well as Pizza from Mama Cucina.  No shortage of refreshments at all.

What a wonderful day of superb wines and great people connecting to sharing the victory of our World Cup. Very special.
