Just over the Helshoogte Pass and set in the dramatic slopes of the Banhoek Valley is Bartinney Private Cellars. This 28-hectare farm has been in the Jordaan family since 1953 and they specialise in Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. Bartinney has a Tasting Shed on the estate, where you can view the Simonsberg valley and all its beauty At the Tasting Shed, I was greeted by a gorgeous chandelier crafter from old vines that adorns their roof. There is both an inside and outside section, and although there is no restaurant, they have platters available. Not child-friendly, as there nothing for them to do at Bartinney. What I learnt: Bartinney is carbon neutral, which means that a zero-carbon footprint in both farming and winemaking has been achieved. They are members of WIETA (Agricultural Ethical Trade Initiative) and WWF Conservation Champion programme.
