The Klein Karoo Wine Route stretches from Montagu to beyond Oudtshoorn in the east - with Herold Winery being the easternmost winery. I attended an interesting tasting last week arranged by the Klein Karoo Wine Route, and generously hosted at Joubert Tradauw, thanks to Meyer & wife Beate, the chef extraordinaire. We tasted through various flights of their wines, starting with their whites (at a magnificent long table in the vineyard), with a wonderful history by Meyer and his dad, accompanied by an exotic platter prepared by Beate. Watch Meyer's informative talk about the area HERE. It has been a while since I tasted their wines, and clearly there is a new wave of young winemakers who, not unlike the Swartland revolutionaries, are shifting the needle of the Klein Karoo wine profile. Fresh and light Sauvignon Blancs, Alvarinho, Chenin Blanc, rich Chardonnay and of course the usual Muscat d'Alexandrie & Colombar and of course still excellent signature Ports and Brandies. This was followed by a tasting through their Portuguese red varieties at their Al Fresco deli on the stoep under the vine creeper. Lots of deep dark juice, covering Tinta Barocca, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Nacional, all blends. But there were also a few single varieties to taste, from Cab Sauvignon (Mont Massif from Montagu - a winner, literally as they were one of only 4 wines to win a double gold at Veritas for Cab Sauvignon and at R185/bottle - I am sure there won't be much left there soon) to Pinot Noir from Herold Winery. My favourites were the Cabernet Francs - a blend from Survivor Wines and the Joubert Tradauw single variety wine. These are both the priciest wines we tasted, but on the whole, their wines were incredibly well priced - many at about R110-R140/bottle. One of the tiniest cellars in the Klein Karoo (probably in the country) is TTT Cellars - meaning 'Things Take Time'. Their Timekeeper wine - a gorgeous medium-bodied red blend, with only 1 barrel made, was very special - and if you can find a bottle - at R100/bottle - is a bargain!
