DGB's Exec Chairman, Tim Hutchinson, is quite remarkable. He has a knack for honouring those who have made an impact on our history, legacy and traditions. The new distillery has a specially made plaque to honour Jaco Potgieter, winemaker of note at DGB for 25 years. DGB bought Backsberg a few years back and its founder, Sydney Back, was a distiller of note. Now the Old Road Distillery is also the home of Sydney Back Brandies, where one can taste and enjoy the remains left by the angels. It is a very stylish new venue just down the road from Franschhoek Cellars. Good brandy takes time and The Old Road Distillery has taken on the skills of Master Distiller, Renaldo Fourie, so watch the space. The building has been beautifully renovated, with two outside areas to enjoy the view and an upstairs board room, bar and function venue. The beautifully appointed venue honours both Sydney Back and the Sinovich family and patriarch, George Sinovich. Tim has been friends with the Sinovich family for years and was excited to discover a one-of-a-kind collection of old brandies and wines from all over the world in the family cellar, which George had collected, virtually untouched, especially as George was a tea-totaller. George died in 1957 and was a pioneer, farmer and property tycoon in Pretoria. In collaboration with George's son Vincent and family, Tim and team lovingly selected a number of bottles to be brought down and cleaned up, to be on display at the entrance of the beautiful destination at Old Road Distillery. A truly unique historial library of spirits and wine being housed at this tastefully renovated destination in Franschhoek.
