On Friday, 8 May 2026, Shiraz SA hosted a thrilling shootout event at Clay Pigeon Adventures at Lourensford Wine Estate in Somerset West. A group of local Shiraz producers and aficionados gathered for an action-packed day of competition, all vying for the coveted title of Shiraz Shootout Champion. For those unfamiliar with the sport, clay pigeon shooting involves participants using shotguns to shoot at special flying targets – called "clays" or "clay pigeons" – which are launched into the air by mechanical devices known as traps. The day concluded with well-deserved celebrations, starting on the shooting range's lookout deck where we enjoyed spectacular views of False Bay and toasted with bubbles, the Lourensford Cap Classique Brut Rosé 2020. Afterwards, we returned to the Clay Hub for lunch, beers, wine and the informal prize-giving ceremony, where Hagen Viljoen, the cellarmaster of Zevenwacht Wine Estate, was crowned the overall shootout champion.
