Elgin Open Gardens | Oneiric | Almenkerk

I have been wanting to explore the Elgin Open gardens for years now - so finally took myself off with some mates to explore them this year. We had no prior recommendations so started off at Almenkerk - where they already had the oysters and cheese platters out which looked yummy! We were not yet hungry so tootled off to a nursery nearby which was sweet and wild. Off again to another tucked away home with hanging willows and tinkling streams. Then to South Hill where their restaurant was abuzz and owner Kevin King was in serious host mode! We were getting hungry by then and the restaurant was full, so off we went and explored down a dirt road to find Oneiric! What a delight! The owners Blaze & his dad were there tending to us, and we had their very fresh and delicious Sauvignon Blanc and I particularly liked their Shiraz. Pricey wines but worth it! Off we went now as we were hungry and after an aborted attempt at the artisanal food we discovered a tucked away garden under the oaks where they served simple and delicious burgers and interesting ciders which we wolfed down! Off to Peregrine for a coffee to end the day, and then we headed back home. I must say we found the gardens a tad disappointing, but really enjoyed the day out.
