CapeWine 2022 was an incredible showcase of the best of South African wines, presented to enthusiastic international media, distributors, importers, as well as many impressed local wine trade. 5-7 October and the days preceding and following were filled with wine events. On the last day of CapeWine, Friday 7 October, on a beautiful Spring evening, a number of WWF Conservation Champion wine farms presented their wines alongside a fascinating sensory tour of our own iconic Kirstenbosch. At this event, we explored the Kirstenbosch gardens' fynbos and flora, guided by the very engaging botanist Rupert Koopman. Fresh air, mountain views, pincushion proteas, delicious wines and indigenous forests were welcomed by all after 3 days in the CTICC for CapeWine. As the sun set, we were engulfed in darkness as the good old loadshedding in South Africa had kicked in and our dinner at Moyo Restaurant started off very romantically by candlelight. We were impressed by fynbos expert Gizelle Courtney who took us on a journey of teas steeped in various powerful fynbos plants. She has also produced a fascinating tasting wheel of fynbos, showing their medicinal properties and so much more. The WWF Conservation Champions (55 wineries) are committed to sustainable agriculture. Many are restoring parts of their land to their original state: A space without alien vegetation where fynbos and renosterveld grow abundantly. They're creating a place where endemic animal and plant species can thrive, conserving and protecting them. All of this adds to the longevity of the South African wine industry.
