Well done to Moët et Chandon and to SASA (South African Sommelier Association) for putting together this competition - it only augurs well for the wine and hospitality to raise the bar.There were 6 finalists who made it to the semi-finals held at the One & Only in the Waterfront on Monday 4 Sept. Only one of them was from Johannesburg and he walked away with the crown!Well done to Wikus Human from Marble - David Higgs' restaurant in Joburg The scores were very tight and he narrowly beat 1st runner-up Pardon Taguzu, from Aubergine, (also in Team Zim going to France next month to compete the the World Blind Wine-tasting Champs), and 2nd Runner-up Isabella Immenkamp (who works as a consultant somm). Next was Marine Point (also recently qualified in France with the Worldsom Diploma, who has just been appointed at La Colombe - working under Joseph Dhafana - also from Team Zim). Sadly we did not get to see James Mukosi - assistant to Tawanda Marume at Rust en Vrede, and Oliver Loxton from Villa 47 on Bree, as they did not make it through to the practical tests in the afternoon.We look forward to next year's Best Sommelier Competition as these young stars move up in the world
