Bellevue is one of the older wine farms in Stellenbosch, situated on the Bottelary Road, and in fact is home to one of the first commercial Pinotages. Their first vineyard was planted in the early 1950s.I attended the relaunch of the farm last week, on a very hot Spring day. The farm was recently purchased by Marinus Neethling, who also owns Canto, an MCC producing wine farm in Durbanville. Bellevue has been in the Morkel family for many many years with PK Morkel, (Dirkie Morkel's uncle) lending his name to their flagship.. PK was instrumental in the plantings of Pinotage on the farm. New and old owners Marinus and Dirkie are working closely together until Dirkie leaves in about a year or so.The original farmhouse was built in 1803, and has kept its charm and rural rustic feel. The new owners have upgraded and renovated very tastefully, with a lovely wide stoep for long afternoon sessions of tastings, pizza and now also a more top end restaurant offering, with new chef Eddie Enslin showing off his culinary prowess.We were wowed by his food, with a very beautiful salmon terrine as a starter, followed by a deliciously rich springbok main, matched with their new 1953 Top end Pinotage, called 1953. It has the deepest punt I have ever seen in a bottle - clearly a pricey bottle. I reckon it is priced in the top end of pinotages in SA - coming in at R545 at the cellar. Very lovely label, great wine, and an excellent match to the springbok.Wilhelm Kritzinger has been at Bellevue for 16 years, and clearly knows the vineyards and wine-making and understands Pinotage very well. We went through a short vertical tasting of their pinotages, and I must say they were light and fruity - which is not a descriptor I have often used for Pinotage.But see for yourself - go and visit and enjoy their lovely long stoep.
