Simonsig Wine Estate in Stellenbosch hosted a group of wine lovers for a vertical tasting of the iconic Simonsig Tiara on Tuesday 7 June 2022. The maiden vintage of Tiara came in 1990, at a time when South Africans were discovering their love for wines styled after those made in France's Bordeaux region. Tiara was the first of the farm's premium range; among SA's first Bordeaux blends; and, the wine that first launched Simonsig's standing as a producer of top quality red wine. Since 1990, the Simonsig Tiara has been released every year and with each new vintage, the style has remained true. The vintages the Simonsig Tiara on offer at this particular tasting included the 2001 (the editor's favourite), 2007, 2008, 2015 (a firm favourite among the guests, esp. in the magnum), current vintage 2017, and the soon-to-be-released 2018 vintage.
