Showcase of Constantia Cool Climate Reds

At a showcase of Constantia's cool climate reds at Groot Constantia on Tuesday 6 September, it was eye-opening to discover the freshness and elegance of the red wines made in the Constantia region.

The oldest wine growing region in the Southern hemisphere, Constantia might be renowned for its premium Sauvignon Blanc, but the region is quietly making waves for their amazing red wines, ranging from blends to single varietals.

The event was a brilliant opportunity to taste the wines and to learn about the prestige of Constantia's reds.

"The Constantia valley has a long history of producing some really interesting red wines," said Boela Gerber, the winemaker at Groot Constantia. "We found some notes about German and French viticulturists that came to the Cape in the 1720s and they wrote about the red Constantia Red that they believe was made from Shiraz in 1724."

We tasted the wines in two flights consisting of three wines each:

Flight 1:

  • Steenberg Catharina Red 2019
  • Beau Constantia LUCCA 2018
  • Buitenverwachting Cabernet Franc 2014

Flight 2:

  • Eagle's Nest Shiraz 2020
  • Constantia Glen FIVE 2019
  • Groot Constantia Gouverneurs Reserve Red 2018
