The Calcrete Collective is a group of custodians of six different family-owned wine estates in the Robertson Wine Valley who came together to establish a new wine category, "Calcrete". This wine category is a minerally unwooded Chardonnay that can only be made of grapes from the Bonnievale-Robertson region. The wineries of the Calcrete Collective are Weltevrede, De Wetshof, Rietvallei, Excelsior, and Van Loveren. This unique collective is committed to a distinctive expression of Robertson terroir through Chardonnays embodying a riveting and distinctive style that is set to become one of the most exciting categories in the Cape wine offering. The Calcrete Collective was officially launched on Tuesday 31 October 2023 at a function at The Silo Hotel at the V&A Waterfont, Cape Town. Guests were welcomed with bubbly on the rooftop before getting together for a formal presentation and a tasting of the six Calcrete Chardonnays. Afterwards, we had lunch with the winemakers at the hotel's Granary Café.
