Court of Masters Sommeliers Graduation 2024 in South Africa

This is the 3rd year for the Court of Masters to bring their program to South Africa, ably managed by Chenin Noir, brainchild of Xolani Mancotywa and now also run by his wife Yasmine.

There were 15 brave people sitting for the 2 courses. many of them Zimbabwean sommeliers and quite a few flying in from around the world.

  • 11 attended for the Introductory Sommelier course - with a 64% pass rate
Congrats to: Kudakwashe Chinhare, Tadiswa Chikwanha, Edina-Kimberly Chisiri, Tendai Marisa, Karl Rohlandt, Tinashe Musora & Spencer Fondaumiere

  • 4 for the Certificate Sommelier course - with a 50% pass rate
Congrats to: Jmal Ahmad Boodhoo & Alister Zengenene

Even the South African Sommeliers Association Chair, Spencer Fondaumiere, who sat the Intro course, found it really hard.  Tough to put yourself out there again.

The graduation / certificate handover ceremony was held at L'Avenir, where the course has been run for the last 3 years too.  Advini, owners of L'Avenir, are great supporters of  sommelier education.

Gareth Ferreira, Ronan Sayburn and Edourd Oger were the lecturers at the course - all Master Sommeliers. South Africa can be very proud to have Gareth Ferreira as its only Master Sommelier. with Ronan a former UK Sommelier of the Year, and represented the UK in the European Sommelier Competition!
