The Enthoven family and the Spier farm in particular are one of the most sought after employers in the wine industry. There are few companies in the world who can keep all their staff employed while totally revamping a big part of their business, viz their hotel. So it is always a pleasure to have the opportunity to visit and learn more about Spier and recently it was a special private tasting with their resident sommelier, Georgio Meletiou, who, not only speaks 6 languages fluently, but also has wine as a first language of note! I always struggle to identify characteristics of varieties and Georgio describes walking down a corridor and having 3 open doors on the side, which lead you to examples of what you may be picking up. Ie, what do you see, then what do you smell - the scent/aroma, then taste and what the options may be for you. It was very enlightening to taste the salinity in the Seaward which are south-facing vineyards close to the ocean, compared to those without much maritime influence. How very special to enjoy their very exclusive Prestige Cuvee Cap Classique which has spent 8 years developing the finest bubbles from the best Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes - and I think under-priced at R450 from the Spier tasting room.
