The Alexander Vineyards wine launch

It is not often one sees the host being teary at a function, but at the launch on Tues 4th Nov The Alexander Vineyards, a long-time dream of owner Stephen Alexander Newton, we witnessed the product of years of yearning and hard work, a beautiful wine range and a stunning property second to none in the Cape Peninsula.

Stephen grew up in Fish Hoek, attended Wynberg Boys High and studied at UCT, becoming a Chartered Accountant and flew off to the UK for the usual work and life experience.

Stephen then stayed and raised a family in the UK, where he clearly worked hard, and as with many successful business people, also had a few failed companies. He finally struck gold when he listed his consulting firm, Elixirr on the London Stock Exchange (LSE) in 2020, being the first company do to so after Covid.

Stephen's grandfather had owned a farm in Noordhoek, which sadly did not manage to stay in the family, and Stephen always vowed he would buy back that piece of land in the name of his grandfather, Alexander Moir.

In 2019, Stephen was driving past the old family farm (which in fact is Cape Point Vineyards), and fortuitously managed to buy the property back.

Fast forward to 2025, and they have developed the property honouring his grandfather, naming it The Alexander Estate. They have built a most beautiful and tasteful Guest Villa with top end luxurious rooms, developed and launched their wine brand (Alexander Vineyards) with their experienced cellarmaster/winemaker CEO Hannes Meyer, employed a chef with impeccable history; Nic Moses - who wowed us with delicious canapes and lunch.

The villa is just below the Cape Point Vineyards venue (the entrance to the farm is at the same gate) and has views to die for across the rim-pool towards Kommetjie and Long Beach.

Hannes has drawn from his many years of experience at Simonsig to Lomond, sourcing and crafting a recognisable and delicious set of wines, with labels designed by the young designer Emma Swanepoel.  Lovely graphic designed swirls of fynbos and protea (Stephen is a protea fan) are an attractive golden thread across the portfolio.

Stephen and his son James both have the middle name of Alexander, another tip of the hat to Alexander Moir and there are wonderful old photographs on the property of his time on the farm in the 1960's.  Very special.

Even though James grew up in the UK, his heart is firmly in South Africa, so much so that he has moved here to manage the property.
