What a pleasure to attend a wine tasting and lunch at Vergelegen, with the new (old) Cellarmaster Luke O’Cuinneagain taking us through their portfolio of wines. I can hardly believe he has been there for 4 years already. The Rosé has always been a favourite of mine, very well priced, fresh and delicious. And of course we were privileged to taste through the ranges; the Estate Range, The Reserve Range and the V - 2 delicious vintages. Doing the tasting in the library really brought it home how steeped Vergelegen is in history; from Willem Adriaan vd Stel in the 1600-1700s to the Theunissen family in the 1800s. The farm was the first WWF Conservation Champion and in the last 20 years or so, really focused on getting the farm back to its natural habitat, removing aliens and seeing streams running for the first time in 40 year after aliens were removed. Our tasting concluded with lunch in the new temporary restaurant Firehorse, so named as it replaces Stables restaurant which is currently being restored after a fire a few months ago. What a stunning space - glass all round with the spectacular views of the Hottentots Holland mountains. We enjoyed an incredibly delicious lunch by chef Michelle Barry. Come hungry, she does big portions! I was sad I had to leave early and missed the visit to The Creamery after lunch! Note to self: Do not accept meetings after functions - I seem to do this a lot.
